The holidays are a popular time for drinking. According to Alcohol.org, drinking rates increase by 33% between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Drunk Driving Statistics

Drunk driving is an issue across the country, no matter the time of year. However, the rates of drunk driving are much higher in December, hence why December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month.

Unfortunately, Texas is notorious for drunk driving accidents. The Lone Star State leads the nation in drunk driving fatalities. 40% of traffic deaths in Texas involve a drunk driver. Nationally, that number is only 29%.

During this month, it’s important to remind people of the dangers of getting behind the wheel of the car impaired. To do so, we have provided some essential statistics:

  • According to the National Safety Council (NSC), 10,511 people died in accidents involving a drunk driver in 2018.
  • According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 30 people die every day in drunk driving accidents.
  • In 2018, 231 children 14 years old and under died in drunk driving accidents.
  • 29% of traffic fatalities across the country involve an impaired driver.
  • Men are more likely to be involved in fatal drunk driving accidents than women.
  • Over 27% of 21 to 24-year-olds in fatal accidents were under the influence.
  • Less than 20% of 45 to 54-year-olds in fatal accidents were under the influence.
  • Drunk drivers make up 40% of traffic fatalities from Christmas to New Year’s.
  • The percentage of drunk drivers in fatal crashes in 2018 by vehicle type was 25% motorcycles, 21% passenger vehicles, and 19% light-trucks.
  • On average, 300 people die in drunk driving accidents over the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

As you can see, drinking and driving is a threat year-round across the entire country. However, due to the increased rates of drinking during the holidays, it becomes more of a risk.

Drunk Driving in Texas

As we mentioned earlier, Texas leads the nation in drunk driving fatalities, with drunk driving accidents accounting for 40% of traffic fatalities in the state. Here are some more facts to show how much of an issue drunk driving is in Texas:

  • In 2019, 886 people died in car accidents involving a driver under the influence of alcohol.
  • Of those deaths, 109 were passengers in vehicles driven by drunk drivers, 48 were pedestrians and bicyclists, 135 were people in vehicles not driven by drunk drivers, and 591 were drunk drivers.
  • In 2019, December had more fatal crashes and fatalities than any other month.
  • In 2017, 37% of drivers in fatal drunk driving accidents were between the ages of 21 and 30.

While the rates of fatal drunk driving accidents have gone down, it is still quite an issue, especially during the holidays. As drinking rates and drunk driving accidents increase in December, it is the perfect month for National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month.

Preventing Drunk Driving Accidents

For one reason or another, people tend to drink much more during the holidays. While there is nothing wrong with that, you should always drink in moderation. The holidays are a time to get together with friends and family, celebrating life and each other. Often, these celebrations involve alcohol, which, again, is not a problem.

The real problem occurs when people get behind the wheel of a car after consuming drugs or alcohol. Alcohol impairs your reflexes and motor skills, which are vital when driving. It also impacts your decision-making skills. Pair these effects with dangerous winter road conditions, and that’s a recipe for disaster.

In observation of National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, Wormington & Bollinger have compiled a list of safety tips to prevent drunk driving accidents:

  • Designate a sober driver before you start drinking.
  • Utilize rideshare apps, such as Uber or Lyft.
  • Plan to stay the night where you are drinking, if possible.
  • Leave your keys at home or give them to someone else for safekeeping.
  • Pace yourself and drink in moderation.
  • Know your body and your limits.
  • Never let your friends get behind the wheel after drinking.
  • Do not drink on an empty stomach.
  • Spread useful information with friends and family, especially younger ones.
  • If you’re hosting a gathering with alcohol, make sure all your guests have a safe ride home.
  • Always wear your seatbelt. Seatbelts reduce the risk of death by 45%.
